Listening, Learning, and Building: How Canopy SDA and Synergis Are Meeting Demand in Tweed

For too long, people with disabilities and their families in Tweed have struggled to find a place that truly feels like home. Traditional group homes might work for some, but many people want more independence, flexibility, and the ability to live with their loved ones. At Canopy SDA, we get that because we’ve spent years listening to participants, support coordinators, and service providers to understand exactly what’s needed.

This new SDA development isn’t just another build—it’s been shaped by the real-life experiences of people in the community, and we’re excited to see it come to life. With construction now underway, this project is now moving from vision to reality.

Why This Build Matters

Tweed has a growing number of NDIS participants looking for a home that suits their individual needs, not a one-size-fits-all model. Over the past year, we’ve had so many conversations with participants and their families who feel stuck—either in housing that doesn’t work for them or waiting for an option that meets their needs. Here’s what we kept hearing:

  • “I want to live independently, not in a group home.”
  • “I need a home where I can live with my family.”
  • “I want flexibility so my home can adapt as my needs change.”

That’s exactly what we’ve set out to provide.

Introducing Our Tweed SDA Development

This property is about real homes for real people. Soon, 8 NDIS participants and their families will move into a space designed with their needs in mind. Here’s what makes it special:

  1. Two Buildings, Four Apartments Each + OOA

This development includes two buildings with four apartments each, plus an on-site overnight Assistance (OOA) space for those who need support close by.

  1. A Flexible Apartment Design

We know that life and support needs change, so we’ve built in flexibility. One of our most exciting features is a 2-bedroom apartment and a 1-bedroom apartment design on the same floor with a private foyer. This allows the two spaces to be used separately or combined into a 3-bedroom home, giving residents more options for how they live.

  1. A Home for Parents and Kids

Finding SDA-compliant housing that works for parents with children has been a huge challenge, and we knew we had to address it. Our 2-bedroom apartments + study are perfect for participants who need space to live with their kids while still having a functional, accessible home.

It’s More Than Just a Building—It’s a Place to Call Home

This development is about people, not just properties. It’s about creating spaces where participants can live life on their terms—independently, with family, and in a home that suits them.

A key player in this project is Synergis Fund, an investment firm that specialises in socially responsible projects. With a focus on creating sustainable and impactful developments, Synergis partners with organisations to drive positive change with a vision that every person living with a disability in Australia has access to high quality, safe, stable and appropriate homes. Their involvement in the Tweed project exemplifies their dedication to creating long-lasting, meaningful change for communities.

Our partnership with Synergis has made this possible, and together, we’re proving that SDA housing can be more than just ticking boxes—it can be about building homes that work for the people who live in them.

What’s Next?

With construction now underway, we’re looking forward to bringing this vision to life over the coming months. If you’re a participant, support coordinator, or service provider, we’d love to chat about how this property might be the right fit for you or someone you support in the future.
